Stay Competitive — Tools, Techniques, and Materials

Formerly known as the AIMCAL Fall Technical Conference, the AIMCAL Web Coating Conference has a long history of advancing the technologies of web processing and finishing to improve efficiencies, reduce waste and introduce new technologies designed to improve competitiveness. The conference is focused on bringing the state of the art to the plant floor, while addressing the problems and opportunities that are part of every manufacturing process. Unlike market based conferences, the AIMCAL Web Coating Conference focuses on technology advancements and best practices that improve quality, productivity and ultimately profitability. It is open to both AIMCAL members and non-members.

Two Session Tracks

The conference is organized into two concurrent tracks – Web Coating and Vacuum Web Coating. Attendees are free to go between tracks to whichever presentations hold the most interest. Common topics of interest between the two tracks are covered in joint sessions for all attendees.

Outstanding Technical Programs and Networking Opportunities

In addition to the outstanding conference program, there are TableTop receptions on Sunday and Monday evenings to allow attendees the opportunity to meet with industry suppliers in an informal and relaxed reception environment. An added bonus for the 2012 event is a Wednesday afternoon of market overviews, led by AWA Research, covering markets of interest to companies with roll to roll processing assets. This session will be open to both Web Coating Conference delegates and Web Handling Conference delegates – co-located at the same facility.

Colocated with the AIMCAL Europe Web Handling Conference 2012

The AIMCAL Europe Web Coating Conference 2012 will be held in conjunction with the AIMCAL Europe Web Handling Conference 2012 – allowing attendees the opportunity to attend both conferences without additional travel expenses.

How Substrate Quality and Cleanliness Affects Roll-to-roll Vacuum Deposition

Dr. Charles Bishop, C.A. Bishop Consulting Ltd.

As with most processes the quality of the input directly affects the output. In this course we will follow the substrate through the roll-to-roll coating process. It starts by looking at what can vary on the incoming substrate how this can affect end products. The substrates can be modified between manufacture and being put into the vacuum system and we will look at what can be modified and what benefits this can give the substrates. We will then look at how the substrate surface can be changed and what effect this has on the nucleation, growth and properties of the coating. Finally we will then look at how the substrate can interact with the web winding and the heat load that the substrate will be exposed to during the deposition process.

Understanding how the substrate affects and interacts with the vacuum deposition process is equally applicable to most, if not all, coatings from simple metalizing through to ultra-barriers, transparent conducting coatings or photovoltaics.

Charles BishopCharles Bishop, after a varied career with Imperial Chemical Industries, elected to return to consultancy work in 1998. He established his own business, C.A.Bishop Consulting Ltd., offering help on all aspects of vacuum deposition including system design, process development and scale-up, process control, plasma surface treatments and coatings, as well as troubleshooting existing processes and running training courses. Charles has published over 60 technical papers, has 5 patents and has conducted training courses in the UK, USA, India and Europe. In 2007 his book Vacuum Deposition onto Webs, Films & Foils was published and this was followed in 2010 by a second book Roll-to-roll vacuum deposition of barrier coatings.

The Basics of Roll-to-roll Vacuum Deposition

Professor Steven Abbott

Adhesion is fundamental to most of us, yet our understanding is often patchy, there are many unhelpful myths and some of the key adhesion concepts are surprisingly little known.

The aim of the course is for attendees to be able to return to their organisation with ideas and tools that can be applied to their real-world adhesion issues. The focus will be on adhesion of polymeric coatings (in the most general sense) to substrates, but key aspects of adhesion of vacuum coatings will be included. Although there is not time for a full discussion of adhesives, some of the key aspects of adhesive design are an integral part of the course.

Professor Steven Abbott will bring his lively presentation style to the course. No prior knowledge of adhesion science is required. He will welcome challenge and debate from attendees to test the ideas against their real-world experiences and, as much as possible, to suggest practical solutions to difficult issues.

Steven AbbottSteven Abbott has a PhD in chemistry from Oxford/Harvard and was a post-doc researcher in the Nobel Prizewinning lab of Prof J-M Lehn in Strasbourg. He was a Senior Research Manager at ICI then Research & Technical Director of MacDermid Autotype during which time he became a Visiting Professor at the School of Mechanical Engineering at U. Leeds. He likes to develop scientific and computer models for practical application across the whole product development process. He started TCNF in 2009. In May 2010 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
