Sealed Air and Danone win MP2022 Awards for sustainable barrier-packaging developments

Substrate provider Sealed Air and CPG brand-owner Danone were honored April 20 with the first biennial MP2022 Awards for their developments in a recyclable barrier film and a bottle which uses less plastic material, respectively. The awards were bestowed during a gala dinner at the fifth edition of the biennial MeetingPack 2022 conference in Valencia, Spain. The companies were recognized for innovative efforts in barrier and sustainability packaging solutions, developed for the food industry. The conference, which runs through today, is jointly organized by AINIA and AIMPLAS.

The Sealed Air development consists of a barrier film for horizontal packaging suitable for recycling. For its part, Danone's is a high-density polyethylene bottle, without a label and with an aluminum cap, which improves recyclability and reduces plastic content.

In this first edition, a total of 18 projects were received, of which three finalists have been selected for each category. Specifically, in the category of solutions oriented toward flexible packaging (films), the following were finalists: Comexi, for flexographic printing for sustainable packaging; Enplater, single-material flexible packaging with barrier properties and resistant to thermal processes; and the award-winning Sealed Air.

The finalists in the category solutions oriented to rigid packaging (trays/bottles) were Danone, awarded in this category; ITC, for a compostable container with oxygen-barrier properties, made from avocado waste, and Lecta for its fully recyclable, biodegradable, polyethylene- and PLA-free paper solution for single-use cups.
